I read a lot of articles when I was at uni about the wearing of black in Kiwi culture, including Doris De Pont’s Black: History of Black in Fashion, Society and Culture in New Zealand, which is well worth a read if you can get your hands on a copy. I’ve always loved wearing black, and as New Zealanders we wear a lot of it, so I thought I’d offer up some of my favourite basic black pieces for the upcoming autumn/winter season.
A little bit of detail on a plain black piece can make a great statement! The studs on this dress are eye catching and will add a little bit of something else to your look. You might be thinking, “Meagan, you’re insane, it’s too cold for this carry on!” but bear with me a moment. It’s all about layering, ladies! Add on a smart jacket, some tights and some hot boots and you’re ready to roll…
I’m on the hunt for great new leggings for the cooler months and adore the texture of these! Leggings are a great way of wearing the dresses and slouchy tops you loved over summer, even when it gets cold.
Can we be practical for a second? It’s been really windy lately, so a charming trench is a must have to keep you warm! Brighten up your look with a cute scarf.
I’m all about the layering, especially in autumn when the weather is shifting between boiling hot and icy cold. That way, you can take off layers when you get warm and add them when you cool down. A body tee like this one from Taking Shape is perfect for layering!
One thing my wardrobe is lacking is cardigans. I can never have enough cardigans! This cropped cardi is perfect for keeping the chill off your back and arms in early autumn.
You can’t go past a classic pair of jeans! After an unsuccessful hunt for a great pair of jeans last year, I’m determined to find one this year, and I’m hoping these will be them!
I love swishy dresses! And nothing beats a little black dress. To make this a little more suited to cooler weather, pair it with tights or leggings to keep your pins warm (and to make sure your bottom is sufficiently covered in the event of a sudden gust of wind!).
Peplum is still in fashion for AW14, so make this cute wee number part of your wardrobe, stat. Do it. I’d buy one right now if I hadn’t forgotten my ASOS log in and locked myself out of my account…
Add a pair of brightly coloured tights to this wardrobe staple and you’re good to go!
How do you wear black? Do you go for all-over black or do you pair your dark colours with brights? Does that change between winter and summer?
