As I’m sure you’re well aware, later this week I am going on my first ever solo trip overseas. While I’ve been making travel plans, I had a friend mention dress codes for flying, and it got me thinking about how we dress when we travel.
The airline I’m flying with doesn’t have much in the way of a dress code, a search of their website reveals only “All customers are required to maintain a tidy standard of dress. For health and safety reasons, travellers are required to wear footwear.” That leaves you with a huge choice, you can pretty much wear anything!
I personally try to go for something that is both comfortable and a bit stylish. Layers are best, something that travels well and doesn’t rumple. My go to is usually a dress, knee length or longer so that I can relax and not worry about it riding up if I fall asleep on the plane and wriggle around a bit (just something I’ve learned from experience haha) with a cardigan or a jacket that I can put on/take off as the temperature requires. On top of that I will wear a coat if I’m taking one, because as we all know coats take up a massive amount of room in your suitcase and it just makes more sense to fill that space with extra pairs of shoes.
Comfortable shoes are absolutely essential, I’ll either wear boots or sneakers, because there is usually a lot of walking required at airports. For a longer flight I will go for sneakers because I like to be able to slip my shoes off easily once I’m settled in my seat. I never wear open toed shoes, because if you’ve ever run over your foot with the trolley loaded up with luggage … that shit hurts. My other essential is sunglasses – unsurprisingly it can get quite bright when you’re up above the clouds, so it’s nice to be able to pop your glasses on rather than having to shut the window shade. They also come in handy for when you get off the plane.
One thing I don’t wear on the plane is makeup. Whether I’m on a plane for an hour or for five hours, I prefer to let my skin breathe. It’s pretty normal that flying will dry your skin out, so I keep my skin makeup free, and make sure I remember my moisturiser!
There are times when I stray from my dress/jacket combo and that’s if I’m going on a long haul or early morning flight. Then it’s comfort all the way! My flight to Melbourne is very early in the morning, so I’m thinking leggings and a big cosy jumper might be in my future…
What do you like to wear on the plane?

Hi,why is 4xl so “small?” I have a friend that still doesnt know to dress (or whats her size) and she always has to get a 10xl because that`s what size 30 is
I think that depends what brand you’re buying – brands do their own sizing so it’s pretty arbitrary and really only relevant to the sizing of that brand. For example, at City Chic I’m a 2XL which is a 24 but at Farmers I’m a 4XL which is a 24-26. It’s a pain that there is no standardised sizing to make finding clothes easier, and that many brands don’t even go up past a 24, but they are out there. If you’d like a few suggestions of places that do a size 26+, check out this post xM
Hehe “shit the window shade” all sorts of mental images there :)) Best laugh all day, thanks.Happy and safe travels
Ahahahaha OMG how did I miss that? Thanks for the heads up Rochelle 😉
I adore the pin tucks at the bottom of that dress!!!
Aren’t they adorable? I love little details like that.
I fly a lot to Australia. I came back yesterday, wore chucks, jeans, a singlet and a sweater. That’s my standard travel attire. If I fly a long trip ill change into leggings so I can sleep more comfortably.
Sounds like a comfy way to travel! Hey, do you have to remove your shoes at airport screening when you’re travelling to Australia?
I like something elastic that sucks me in a little (bigger girl) and considerate of those next to me yet still comfy leggings are my go to. I also like pockets for my phone so tunic (city chic ones). I tend to wear slip on sketchers as I’m traveling in the US I have to take my shoes on and off at airports screening nothing worse than awkwardly trying to zip my shoes standing. For long haul flights I wear flight socks too, no swelling or dvts for me. Have a blast in Melbourne !
Oh wow, I had no idea you had to remove your shoes! I’m suddenly rethinking my choice of footwear because my boots are a pain to lace up. Is that only in the US or is it everywhere that you have to remove your shoes for screening?
I’m a fan of the slip on elastic sided shoe for flying, because my feet swell. I also avoid tight waist band, because any gas in your body expands by at least 20% in a pressurized cabin, and that can mean a very sore tum. I like to wear a wrap because it doubles as a blankie if the other passengers have nabbed them first. Happy travels Meagan! Can’t wait to read about MFW!
Slip on elastic sided shoes sound like a great idea! Thanks for the tip about the waist band as well, I never knew that about the gas in your body expanding!
