Gone are the days of high heels, uncomfortable g strings and hemlines I’m constantly pulling down, one thing I look for in my clothes now is comfort. As someone who works from home, I freely admit that I quite often get up and shower only to put on a clean pair of pyjama pants (come on, don’t tell me you wouldn’t wear pyjamas all the time if you could!). When I have to put on real world clothes, being comfortable is key.
When I cleared out my wardrobe recently for a yard sale, a lot of the pieces I found myself getting rid of were pieces that I didn’t feel comfortable in. Things that were tight, things that were too loose and kept slipping down, things that rode up… I just found myself not wearing them and they took up space in my closet, so it was time for them to go.
I realised that my closet has had a bit of an evolution: first, I went for anything that would fit me, because finding clothes as a fat person in New Zealand was hard! Then I started going for anything flowy in black (because apparently that makes you look slimmer … like maybe I could trick people into thinking I wasn’t fat?). The next evolution was a rebellion, wearing crop tops, colour, patterns, anything that I was told that fat girls shouldn’t. Next, I started rediscovering my style and finding what it was I loved wearing – I’ve gravitated back to black and other dark colours, to stripes and neutrals and pieces that are quietly me. And now I’m at the point where I have realised that I don’t need to own all of the clothes in the world and it’s time to start paring things back to the pieces I’m actually going to wear.
There seem to be a lot of dresses like this one, that are figure hugging. That’s a great description actually, because this dress feels like a hug. I’m a bit sad that we are coming in to summer, because this dress is quite a heavy fabric and it’s already getting too hot for me to wear so I’ll have to pack it away until the end of next autumn. Luckily I have a few more lighter ones to wear in the meantime!
I’ve been thinking about how I’d describe my style now that I’ve refined it, and the words I decided on were dark, classic, comfortable and sometimes daring.
How would you describe your style?

comfort is what I like, and Im still discovering my style. I love bright colours, and hats. And Jewellery
Being comfortable is SO important!
YES! I feel so the same with many of those points. I still love my colour and prints, but I find i’m favouring more comfortable clothing. I feel I have a few different styles, I blame that on being a Gemini, but lately I find myself going for comfortable & darker colours again.
I reaaaally need to work at my style.
Currently it’s black, jeans, black, and black.
Black, jeans, black, and black sounds awesome to me!
I’m very much about comfort even at the work place. I have a grey pencil skirt that I bought in the UK and love to wear. I need a new one really. I often pop on a T-shirt with it or a floaty top and in winter I have leggings and ankle boots and in summer I leave my legs bare. I really like wearing casual pants and a T-shirt. Not really into jeans as I’m an odd shape and they’re either crushing my calves/thighs or falling off my bum.
Above all, I like clothes I can move in. I don’t like to restrict how I move for the sake of a piece of clothing.
Hurray for comfort! I think jeans are one of the most agonising things to buy – finding a great fit in plus can be so hard (especially if you’re above an 18)
hmmmm…. that’s one to ponder! I think I’d describe my style as classic, simple and strong. I would really love to wear more floral, but I find myself reaching for stripes, mono and really wearable classics. I don’t love busy busy, except on other people. Although, I did see and incredible LaLA top the other night at your screening in the most phenomenal print. So there are exceptions! I think if I owned that I would wear it and wear it.
I agree – I don’t usually love busy busy, except on other people. Was it this one that you liked? It’s such a stunning print.
