One of the things I’ve learned as someone who wears a lot of black on black is that texture is important – it makes an all black outfit look much more interesting. Lately I’ve been getting in to sheer fabrics and I feel like it’s making a big difference to my outfit game.
A black cage bra with a sheer dress that has a crossover detail on the back, black on black leopard print pants and dark charcoal and black snakeskin boots? That’s how I’m layering my texture. There’s sheer, there’s matte, there’s strappy, there’s floaty, and then there’s the texture of that (faux) snakeskin.
When I put this outfit together I started with the shoes because on their own they are super textured and really stand out. They are the kind of thing that will liven up a plain outfit, but when paired with other interesting pieces, they push me out of my fashion comfort zone.
The leggings have been a wardrobe staple for the last couple of months (honestly, I’ve worn them so much!), the black on black leopard print just steps them up from your average pair of tights and they are super stretchy and comfortable. The older I get, the more I’m focusing on comfortable clothes (come on, I know I’m not the only one, admit it!)
As for sheer fabrics, there is no denying that I am loving them right now. A little hint of skin, a small peek of lingerie, there’s just something about them that makes me feel so great. I can’t wait for summer so I can bring a lot more of this into my outfits – at the moment it still feels like I’m in winter layer mode most days (merino, merino and more merino for me please!).
How do you wear texture in your outfits?
