When I was a teenager, I’d flick through fashion magazines and never see anyone like me (even when I was thin – not a lot of Māori girls in those fashion mags in the 90’s). Whether it was catwalks, catalogues or celebrity style, almost everyone looked the same. They were tall, young, white, slim and able bodied. Fast forward twenty years and not all that much has changed. While we do see a small amount of diversity in fashion these days, I don’t think that it’s enough. Nike has plus size mannequins and some people are mad about it
Nike has put some plus size mannequins in one of their stores, and it’s making some people mad. This basically happens any time there is a positive story about fat people doing anything anywhere. Looking at television, magazines, films and on the catwalk, you wouldn’t think so, because plus size bodies are very rarely represented in a positive way in the media. Editorial Shoot with The Chub Club
A little while ago I was desperately searching for a bandeau swim top. Just a plain black one, that gave me sufficient boob coverage. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon Chubby Cartwheels – a plus size clothing and accessories store whose website actually makes me want to have my entire paycheck direct credited straight to them. Yes, it’s that amazing.
