Today I wanted to pay homage to not one but two of my style crushes. I’ve recently realised that they both really influence the way that I dress and the way my sense of style has evolved over the last couple of years, so I thought I’d put together an outfit that mashes their style together.
If you have read my post about my favourite plus size bloggers for style inspo, there is a good chance that you will be able to guess which babes I’m talking about. In case you’re not familiar with them, here’s a little run down on their style and why they inspire my wardrobe choices.
Canadian blogger Margot Meanie wears a lot of black, but don’t be fooled into thinking her wardrobe is boring at all. She is the master of mixing textures and fabrics, and was one of my inspirations to go back and embrace my love of darker clothing. For a long time I felt like I was somehow obliged to wear a lot of colour, in an attempt to “disprove” all of the things that people say about what fat women should or should not wear, but seeing Margot embrace that darker aesthetic encouraged me to ditch the brighter colours that didn’t really call to me and rediscover my sense of style.
I first came across Natalie on Tumblr (she’s nataliemeansnice) a few years ago and really loved the way she talked about self love and acceptance. Natalie was not only one of the people who helped me begin to love my own body, she also makes me want to help others love theirs as well. She was one of the first fat girls in my life who was unapologetic about her fat body, and when I look at the way she breaks so many of the so-called “fat girl rules” when it comes to dressing, it inspires me to take more risks with what I wear.
Velvet leggings worn as pants that hug the curve of my belly? Check. Caged crop top that bares my stomach, complete with stretch marks and chicken pox scars? Check. Sleeveless duster coat that does nothing to hide my wobbly fat arms? Check. I’m defying quite a few so-called fat girl fashion rules with this outfit and it makes me feel … free.
Now if only Margot, Natalie and I could all be in the same place at the same time, I would be happy. It’s awesome that the far reaching arm of the internet allows me to be friends with people who live so far away, but I do wish that we were closer, because not only are both of these gals amazing dressers they are also strong, inspiring women who I’d love to spend time with in person.
Who is your style crush?
Meagan wears:
Caged Crop Top from Society+ (22/24)
Black Velvet Leggings by Chubby Cartwheels (5X)
Black Dahlia Duster from Empress Eleven (L, gifted)
Alexa Glasses from Specsavers
Scala Fedora from Hatworx
Head Over Heels Bronte Ankle Boots from Number One Shoes (9)
There is something that is inspiring but most of all empowering about seeing bodies of all shapes and sizes being represented. The first ever blog i saw was Young,Fat & Fabulous, now GabiFresh. Here was a girl, who looked like me, but unlike me, beamed such confidence that came with the feeling of absolute comfort in her own skin.
This was the first blog that introduced me to this whole on-line community i never knew existed but thank god i found it. Most of the blogs served as inspiration for fashion, something Ive always loved, but soon became more about focusing on building confidence within.
This blog as well as many others serve the purpose of representing diversity in a world that has come to idolize one particular view of beauty and in turn your worth as a woman, as a human being to this measure.
Didnt mean to get all fem, but its something that has taken me a while to figure out, anyway the following Blogs and Tumblrs over the many years have been my FATabulous style crushez and inspiration-

Thanks so much Marie, that means so much ❤️ There are a few blogs on there that I haven’t visited yet but I’m going to now! x
YES YES YES YES YES YAASSS! I love both Margot and Natalie, and then to see you dressed like this, another fave blogger, just works! I think you totally rock this look and I love how you took a little of both and made it your own! <3
I love this! The words ‘unapologetic about her fat body’ really strike me! It is so true that people feel they should be ashamed of their body, whether that is because society says they’re too big or small or too short or tall etc etc! A “this is me, and what?!” attitude is so refreshing! This look looks stunning on you and it really shows that you feel stunning in it! xxx <3 <3
Looking amazing Meagan, awesome outfit!
I dunno if I have a style crush…hmmm I’d say I’m a little bit influenced by what NBA players wear to their games, as in their off-court fashion. A little bit rockabilly pinup throw back from my days living in that look, a little bit punk and hardcore, a little bit rock n roll, a heap of hip hop influence and nerdy, geeky shit too. For femme inspo probably Gwen Stefani was/is a big go to.
Great inspo Meagan, they both had very cool style and I love how you’ve incorporated bits of each into something that is your own. The velvet leggings are lush too! <3
I never thought velvet leggings would have a place in my wardrobe but I love them so much! All of the velvet for me please! Such an old goth haha
love this look Meagan!!
