Some people like to save their love of ghosts and ghouls and all things creepy for Hallowe’en season. I am learning to embrace my inner spooky girl all year round.
When I was younger, I got hassled a lot for being a bit weird. I collected gemstones and old medicine bottles; talked to animals; and played alone in the forest. Honestly, it was a fairy tale waiting to happen… or maybe a dark Disney movie. I also loved skulls and tarot cards; learning about the mysteries of the universe; and talking to my dead relatives. While other girls played with dolls or tried out for the netball team, I read books about cults and serial killers or created magic potions (and played on the hockey team).
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve kept that part of myself a bit closed off and not really talked about it, but that part of me still lives on (as I look around my house filled with plants, gemstones and old medicine bottles). I feel like this is a bit of a coming of age thing maybe, when you start to really accept that you don’t care if you’re the same as the cool kids, your personality and your style is a reflection of you and that’s okay? I think that having people around me like Margot Meanie and Maggie McGill has really helped me to embrace that spooky aesthetic as part of my clothing choices as well.
Honestly, Instagram has been both a game changer and a big affirmation for me in terms of my style and well… everything. It’s so liberating to see other fat people. Other queer babes. Other women with bodies shaped like mine. Fat people with all manner of styles under the sun. It’s allowed me to experiment and try new things (and old things!). I’ve found so many styling ideas, and I love it. I’m definitely keen to bring back a little bit of spooky to how I dress, so I’m starting with the addition of this ouija print skirt (a birthday gift from Joolz Fashion) and this skull necklace which I’ve had for years and years, made by a dear friend of mine.
So here’s to embracing your inner weirdo. Wearing your spooky heart on your sleeve. Dressing to express all parts of your personality. Anyone else like embracing the spooky girl aesthetic every now and then (or all the time!)?
