Rockabilly Curls Tutorial

Ever wondered how to get gorgeous rockabilly curls like I had in this photo set? Here is a step by step guide so you can channel your inner Dita Von Teese and recreate this look at home.

Rockabilly Curls

So this is the look that I started out trying to recreate – it’s one of Sebastian‘s looks for spring, and is a fun flirty style that you can wear to end of year events or just for a wee bit of fun.

To recreate this look you will need:

  • Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte – this is a super strong-hold mousse for curls and waves. You can find it at your local Sebastian salon for $39.00
  • Sebastian Professional Volupt Spray – this is a volume building spray gel that leaves you with a great combination of volume and softness. You can find it at your local Sebastian salon for $37.00
  • Sebastian Professional Shine Define – this is a shine enhancing and flexible hold spray that protects your hair from hot tools whilst conditioning it with a natural, brushable sheen that leaves your hair with irresistible shine and definition. You can find it at your local Sebastian salon for $34.00
  • Hair dryer + brush
  • Hot rollers
  • Bobby pins
  • Tail comb
  • Soft bristled brushRockabilly Curls

Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte and Volupt Spray1. Apply Sebastian Mousse Forte and Volupt Spray to damp hair to amp up the volume.

Blow dry your hair to add volume and you can be a lion like me! Rawr.

2. Continue by blasting hair dry to set in product and extra height. Volume is key!

Rockabilly Curls3. Once your hair is completely dry, start applying hot rollers. Section your hair and work your way through the entire head rolling and pinning. Leave a front square section loose so that you can create a roll at the front.  If you already have a fringe, you’ll need to take some extra hair and brush it forward so that you have a reasonable amount of length to work with.

Curlers galorePRO TIP: When putting your rollers in, make sure that they curl under (as in, the hair goes over the roller to begin with and you roll it under) to give you volume at the roots.

Cheeeeeese4. Taking a front square section of hair, create a loose roll and pin into place using bobby pins. The best way to do this is to comb it forward and gently roll from the bottom (you may need to do it in three sections, one in the middle and one on either side to get the best effect).  If you already have a fringe you will need to take some extra hair and brush it forward so that you have a reasonable amount of length to work with – regular length bangs aren’t gonna cut it!

The girl with the curls5. By now, all of the rollers should be set and cooled. Remove the rollers and lightly brush out the curls using a Mason & Pearson style bristle brush.

Sebastian Professional Shine Define6. Complete the style by applying Sebastian Shine Define to finish the look with a glamorous shine-enhanced hold.

This is what happens when I try to wrangle my own long hair - it all goes wrong!

This is what happens when I try to wrangle my own long hair – it all goes wrong!

I have a bit of a confession to make.  Because I have such crazy long mermaid hair (it’s almost down to my waist), it’s really difficult to blowdry myself and almost impossible for me to do a good job putting rollers in. I just can’t seem to get the angles right! After one failed attempt where I discovered this, I enlisted the help of my friend Cassie to help wrangle my hair. Sometimes looking fabulous requires a little bit of assistance!

So, how is your hair looking? I hope you found this tutorial helpful!

With my curly hair I find it pretty much impossible to style it. However sometimes to emphasize a round fringe more I use a home made rat roll. Its one of the old ways to get that cute rockabilly fringe. you can use a hair donut cut to creat a tube then wrap your fringe around it and pin in place. it last all day and wont come undone!

That’s a great idea Ezmae! Much easier than trying to wrangle your fringe into a roll without one.
