I’ve had a love/hate relationship with solid shampoos and conditioners for quite a while now. I really like the idea of them but many of the ones I’ve tried just don’t give me the result I want and I’m yet to find one that I’ve loved enough to keep buying it – until I tried the Lush Jungle Solid Conditioner.
I actually switched back to using Essano shampoo and conditioner (which I love) after staying with family and using theirs – I was reminded of how amazingly soft and smooth it made my hair, and I’m still using their Argan Oil Serum. But as much as I love their shampoo and conditioner, I hate the amount of wastage that comes with it (both in terms of product trapped in the bottom of the bottle that I can’t get out, and the plastic packaging). So I decided to switch back to using solid shampoo and conditioner, and of course I wanted to go with something from Lush – I love their products and the company ethos, and I’ve tried a few of their hair products before. Instead of rushing in and picking something based on how great it smells, I decided to do a bit of research to make sure I was getting the right product (which I know you should do all the time, but I’m lazy and usually rush buying).
First I had a look at what was on offer, what it said it did and what the ingredients were (of course I had to make sure it was something I’d like the smell of), and made a bit of a shortlist. Then I read reviews – on the Lush website, on blogs, you know the deal. The reviews were a really important part of making a final decision (and why I’m writing this review), because that was where I found people talking about what their results were and what kind of hair they had. I know this might sound naive, but despite having unruly wavy locks, I’d never really thought about the fact that not all hair products are made for all hair types, and so not everyone would have the same results from the same product. So reading those reviews really clued me in.
I ended up choosing the Jungle Solid Conditioner, based on the fact that it has delicious sounding ingredients like avocado, figs, banana and passionfruit (basically a fruit salad for your hair!), and the great reviews I read from people with curly hair.
HOW TO USE A SOLID CONDITIONER:
If you’ve never used a solid conditioner before, it’s a bit different from the regular liquid ones you’re used to. It comes in a bar that looks like a soap (pictured above), but as it’s a conditioner it won’t lather up with bubbles in the same way as soap does. There are a couple of different ways that you can use this – you can either work the bar between your hands to get a creamy lather (a little goes a long way) and then apply it to the mid lengths and ends of your hair or you can apply it directly to your hair by running the bar down from the mid lengths to the ends of your hair and working it in. I prefer the second option, as I find that I use less product this way. Leave it a couple of minutes to work it’s magic and then rinse off as normal. Make sure you store your solid conditioner bar outside the shower where it won’t get wet – I actually just pop in on the square of paper it came wrapped in, and let it dry out on there.
MY VERDICT: I really like how soft and manageable my hair is, without losing any of my natural curls. The smell of the conditioner is amazing, a bit like a subtle fruit salad, which I really like. I noticed that a few people had mentioned that their bars didn’t last very long, but mine last 6-8 weeks when they’re stored outside the shower. I have had so many compliments on my hair since I started using this product, and I’m definitely going to continue using it (I’ve already repurchased it twice).
SHOP IT: Jungle Solid Conditioner is $12.50 for a 50g bar and is available online or from Lush stores.
Have you tried a solid shampoo or conditioner before?
Thanks for sharing – is one of the things on my list for plastic free July and I have the same hair type as you although minenever looks as gorgeous as your does
Let me know how you find it, Charmaine! Hopefully you love it as much as I do x
I use a Lush Soak & Float solid shampoo but a liquid conditioner, might have to look at this one next time I need to purchase!
How do you find the Soak & Float, Loz? I’ve had a few people say that they found it really drying, which kind of surprised me as the description on the website said it had ingredients used to treat psoriasis, dandruff, and eczema so I thought it might be a bit more moisturising
Does the bar come in a shampoo bar too!!!! I so do you use that too!
Nope, but they have lots of other lovely shampoo bars to choose from
I use Ethique shampoo and conditioner, their wonder bar you can even use before you shave your legs, love a dual use product with no waste!!
Yes! Ethique does some great products, I tried them out back in 2013 and really liked them
