Monochrome prints will always be my favourite – now that my wardrobe has returned to a darker palette, I find that basic black and white prints go with all of my basics, as well as any coloured accessories I might be rocking. If you’re new to the world of prints and patterns then black and white is a great place to start.
I got these pants a year ago (I got some and my mama bought some as well) and have been wearing them quite a lot recently. I seem to have really embraced print pants as part of my wardrobe, and while I was away in Gisborne (more about that trip coming up soon) I wore these a lot. Not just with black tops either, I’ve been wearing them with maroon and army green as well! Look at me, embracing autumn…
Monochrome is great for mixing patterns as well – my pants are kind of checked and I knew that a basic polka dot print like this scarf would be a good contrast while not being too overwhelming and clashy. Scarves are probably the easiest way to change up your outfit and accessorise in winter because not only do they come in lots of different colours, you can also pick different style and fabrics. If you follow me on snapchat, you might have noticed that I switched out my polka dot scarf for a blue loop scarf this afternoon when it was pouring with rain and super cold – a great way to keep warm and help me feel snuggly!
What kind of prints do you wear? Do you like to keep it basic like me or do you prefer something with a bit more detail? I’ve seen so many cool prints around lately, from florals to basics to full on scenes like this skirt, and there really is something for everyone.
What kind of prints do you like and how do you style them?

Hi Meagan. Great outfit! I love how the pattern of your pants works so well with your scarf. Monochrome or using a neutral base palette of colours makes it so easy to make the most of a wardrobe. I really love polka dots and they look great with stripes and other prints.
I’ve decided to choose one base neutral colour (gray), a second neutral (navy for cold season, camel for warm season – I’m trying to ditch the black, it doesn’t suit me) then two accent colours each season. With this plan I’ve sewed smart work shift dresses and skirts in these colours (I was sick of not being able to find plus size corporate clothes in good quality fabric that cost less than $400). Now I have a great base wardrobe. I’ll work in some print shirts or blouses in the colours.
A pop of bright red lipstick, and your hair in a high bun would also look great with what you’re wearing. Even a bag in a different pattern would work.
I have loads of navy in my wardrobe, I think I’ve been slowly amassing it, and I wear it loads in winter – am wearing head to toe navy today! How fab that you’ve sewed your own skirts and dresses, I’ve always wanted to be able to do that but unfortunately I just don’t have an affinity for dressmaking.
