It’s that time of year when many of us are heading back to work, or maybe starting a new job (or looking for one), so it’s time to talk about officewear. As you know, I work from home (sometimes in my pyjamas) and I work in a creative industry rather than a corporate one, so even when I have meetings I don’t need to dress in the same way as someone who is in an office all the time. I do love helping other people find clothes they feel confident in though, and I’m pretty adept at browing the shops for clothing options, so let’s talk plus size workwear.
There are loads of different dress codes when it comes to office outfits – some people have to have their shoulders covered; some must wear a suit; some can be as out there as they like. Then there’s the combos of what you want to wear – are you a blouse and tailored trousers person, do you prefer a skirt with a top, a blazer, a matching suit, a dress, with stockings or without? I’ll group the things I’ve found into categories and then you can mix and match your faves from there.
TOPS
Blouses, button down shirts, tunics, shell tops, button ups … you can wear them alone or pair them with a cardigan or blazer, match them with trousers, a skirt or perhaps even culottes. Some of the things I think it’s important to look for are comfort, a good range of movement (it’s very important to be able to move around without feeling restricted), and fabric that feels nice on – you’re going to be wearing them for a whole day after all! Even if you’re going for a classic style top or plain black/white, you can still bring in interesting details with different fabrics, textured detail, buttons or even cufflinks.

DRESSES
Dresses are my go to office attire because they’re a “one and done” outfit. No matching tops with bottoms, just throw on one piece (and maybe some stockings if it’s cold) and you’re good to go. Keep an eye on your necklines and necklines as I find that some dresses can be quite low cut or have shorter hems that I’d like for the office.

It’s interesting you should talk about dress codes, as we have what I consider to be the archaic rule of wearing pantyhose with any dresses or skirts. Doe’s anyone else have this?
Oh wow, I never had that when I worked in finance or in medical admin! What kind of business are you in?
Just office work. So frustrating, and I tend to wear trousers instead of a dress (which as you say is super easy)
I love wearing dresses, usually knee length, the more colour the better. I struggle to find pretty cardigans to wear over them.
I don’t really wear cardigans but have had a lot of friends recommend the ones from ModCloth (they have lots of super cute ones and some of these ones from Atomic Cherry, plus I found these ones at Two Lippy Ladies.
Brilliant, thank you very much!
You’re most welcome!
