I’m lucky in that my current job doesn’t have a dress code. When it comes to workwear, most of the time if I’m working from home I’m wearing pyjama pants or leggings because if I’m not comfortable I find it hard to concentrate on writing. If I’m heading out to meet with someone or to an event I’ll dress up, it’s always fun picking an outfit now that I don’t have to wear a uniform or comply with an office dress code.
I have worked all manner of jobs – I’ve worked in kitchens, in bars, in offices, and in banks; I’ve worked in finance, education, market research and at non-profits; I’ve been a photographer, a nanny and managed teams of people. Now, I’m a full time blogger and you better believe that I bring in skills I’ve learned at all of those jobs into this one – including what I’ve learned about what to wear (and what not to wear).
I remember that it’s not easy to get the balance of outfit right for the office when you’re plus size, especially when you’re a size 20 and above, have a big bust, or both. Workwear that works for someone with a smaller bust don’t work for me (button up shirts, for example), so I’ve had to find alternatives. One place that has some really nice high quality pieces that are suitable for the office is Lane Bryant. I recently teamed up with them on a project that I’m part of (more details about that to come) and got to wear a couple of their pieces, so I thought I’d choose something that would be suitable for the office to share with you!
This skirt is super comfortable and made from a nice stretchy ponte fabric – it’s thick and structured enough to be great for the office, and it has pockets. It’s not going to crumple when you’re sitting at your desk and that has to be one of the reasons I love it – I hate looking and feeling rumpled when I’m trying to do my job. I’m wearing a 26/28 (which is what my measurements suggested on the size chart) but could have sized down because the skirt is quite loose. The top was a great way to bring my love of stripes into the office, and it’s a higher cut tank so my cleavage is sufficiently covered. If you work somewhere where you need to (or want to) cover your arms, a simple blazer is perfect! I think a lot of dressing for the office as a plus size woman is about choosing your fabric and the cut of your outfit carefully.
What’s the dress code like where you work?

I so agree about pockets, be it in skirts, pants or polo shirts.
I have two jobs, both with a dress code. Job 1 – black trackpants, running shoes, company polo shirt in red and yellow with a mandarin collar & a black thermal under garment (if required) Company zip up vest or long-sleeved jacket (also in red and yellow) when cold. Job 2 – Plain black pants and black shoe/boots. Company polo shirt, also in black with embroidered logo in white/silver.The look is completed with a blue lanyard. Not my two colours of choice together, black and a very dark blue…
Yes to all of the pockets! I love the idea of having a company shirt – not always the most flattering (especially polo shirts), but it sure as heck does make getting ready in the morning a lot easier!
Do you have any other stockists that you add suggest? Affordable plus size corporate wear is hard to find.
Hi Rachel, there are a few places here that have some great options!
Skirts with pockets are LIFE!! I work in an office so corporate wear is what I am meant to wear. But I do push the line a little bit, I would rather be comfortable! I generally wear a black skirt or pants and a long sleeve top or t-shirt and cardigan. 😀 xxx
Comfort is SO important! I think that a black skirt with a top is a nice easy option
I love skirts with pockets! I have to carry around a cordless phone for my job so having somewhere to put it is essential! I need to have my hands free to make coffee or help a client etc.
They just make things so much easier don’t they? All of my favourite skirts have pockets in them
