Fat is not a four-letter word

Meagan Kerr existing while fat

Hands up if you’ve ever been called fat.

Whether you’ve heard it as a schoolyard taunt, an unkind remark from a stranger or a “well-meaning” comment from a relative, chances are that if you’ve ever been called fat it hasn’t been in a positive way. So understandably, it’s a word that you might have a few negative connotations with.

“Please don’t refer to yourself as fat it’s not helping one bit … I understand you feel comfortable, but that word should never be used on anyone – it’s not a positive…”

This comment came from someone following me on Instagram, and it’s similar to things I hear on a semi regular basis, which prompted me to write this post. View Post

Fat Yoga

Fat Yoga NZ

Some of the babes from our Fat Yoga sessions

I’ve been practising yoga on and off for about 15 years to help with strength, flexibility and mental well being. I’ve used yoga to help heal my body, to give myself much needed “me time” and because I really enjoy it. But in all that time, I have never been to a yoga class with another fat person – that is until Fat Yoga started up here in Auckland. I don’t know where y’all have been before now but I’m really excited to have connected with so many awesome people. View Post

Sculptured

One thing I’ve noticed in the world of plus size fashion, is how often we use terms like flattering to describe clothes that create the illusion of you being smaller, more hourglass shaped (which is apparently the ideal body shape) or that hide supposed “flaws”. Quite often, people tell me that things I wear are not flattering because they accentuate my wide hips or they are fitted to my body or, in complete contradiction, are not fitted to my body. Hide yourself in fabric, but not too much or you’ll look fat. View Post

Black on Black

Plus size women rocking black on black outfits

As you well know, I am a big fan of all black everything. Give me layers upon layers of black on black, add a smidge more black and you’ve just about nailed it. Different fabrics, textures and details are part of what takes an all black outfit to the next level, and I’ve found some babes rocking black on black to help inspire you. View Post

Keep it kind

keep it kind online - making the internet a nicer and safer place to be

I’ll never forget the first time a story about me was published by a mainstream media source. Despite receiving the occasional nasty comment about my body or criticism on something I’d written, absolutely nothing could have prepared me for the vitriol that I found in the comments section of that article. Comments that had, according to the publishing website, been moderated. Well holy heck, if what I was reading had been moderated and considered appropriate to be approved then I’d hate to see what they decided not to publish. View Post
