Something I’m really passionate about is looking after myself as a whole – making sure I drink enough water, eating mindfully (and not feeling bad when I eat chocolate), sticking to a skin routine, and making sure I get out and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Part of that also includes looking after my health.
October is Breast Cancer month, so I want to take the opportunity to tell you about something that could save your life, Skinfood’s Breast Cream.
No, it doesn’t have a magical ingredient that will prevent breast cancer – but using it and getting to “know your normal” will help you to know if something isn’t right – meaning that you can get it checked by a doctor and if something is amiss, they can take action straight away.
In New Zealand, the free mammogram programme is only available to women from age 45 (as breast cancer mainly affects women over 50). While breast cancer in women under 40 isn’t considered common – affecting around 400 New Zealand women under the age of 40 every year – it can be more aggressive so it’s important that you get to know your body and do regular breast checks from the time you’re 20. I’ve had a number of people close to me affected by breast cancer so I understand how important it is to be aware.
For more information about how to get to know your normal and what to look out for, you can visit the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s website.
I’ve made it part of my regular Sunday night ritual after I have a bath. It’s a time that I set aside just for me, including a face mask, a bath and a good book followed by slathering my whole body in moisturiser and getting a good night’s rest. I found it super easy to make the change from my regular moisturiser to Skinfood’s Breast Cream because it smells divine and makes my skin super soft!

Love the idea of a self care/self love routine. I think we all deserve to love ourselves more which is why I created the Self Love September blog post and the Orgasmic October – awakening all our senses. You can check them out here http://cgrace4wellbeing.blogspot.co.nz/2014_09_01_archive.html
Keep up the great wor
k Megan!
I like to turn on my portable stereo, light some candles and shower with the door locked so my 11 and 9 yr old can’t get in. Doesn’t stop them yelling through the door though 😉
Sounds like a much deserved few moments to yourself! 😉
About 4 or 5 month’s ago I found an anomily in one of my breasts and my GP sent me for a Mammogram. I got the ALL CLEAR but it was a scary week waiting for the result’s. This cream would definitely help with early detection as well as putting moisture into your boobies and reminding you to be actively looking for changes.
I’m so glad to hear that you’ve been the all clear Karen, I can only imagine how scary that would be! Early detection is definitely the key, especially while we are young and not eligible for the mammogram programme! xM
Looks great would love to try it.
It smells amazing too! xM
I never treat or pamper myself, I’m more worried about treating others. Like my mum and daughters
Maybe time for all of you to have treats! And get to know your normal 😉 xM
I’m pretty bad at pampering myself, I don’t really keep up with a nice self care ritual as much as I would like to. lately I’ve been nourishing my skin with coconut oil as much as I can though as it makes my skin feel so smooth. This post makes me feel like taking a nice long bath with a lush bath bomb.
Do you use the coconut oil as a moisturiser? I love the idea of having lovely skin and smelling all coconutty 😀 A Lush bath bomb sounds perfect for a cold rainy day like today! xo
So important ‘Know your normal’. My family are effected by the BRCA1 gene (which greatly increases woman’s risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer) so this is matter close to my heart. I have chosen not to get tested for the gene but it does mean I have to be even more aware of my body. My cousin found she had the gene and took the brave step of undergoing a double mastectomy to ensure she is here to see her kids grow up.
Gosh, I’ve just been reading articles about BRCA1 and women undergoing double mastectomies. Lots of love to you and your family Helen, it’s not easy going through any of that and makes us all the more aware of how important the regular checks are x
Loving this!! I can’t find this cream any where 🙂
Hey lovely, you can purchase directly from Skinfood using the link in the post xx
Treating myself = a sauna once a week and a face mask when I feel like it!
Yum, I could go for a bit of that right now!
sounds like a little bit of pampering, thats always a good thing 🙂
I try and make sure I give myself 30 minutes after my shower each night to moisturise my body and give my face a good cleanse etc…
Good on you Jackie! A great way to wind down before bed! xM
Gorgeous, I’d love to win!
Hey, I wrote a post about breast cancer awareness month too! http://sashahope.com/breast-cancer-awareness-month/
I’d never heard of this cream before, is it something you can only get in New Zealand? I live in London.
SASHA x:)
Awesome post Sasha! Skinfood is a New Zealand company and they ship worldwide – you can order the breast cream here.
Looks fantastic I really I want to try it. Its such a good concept getting to know your normal as my nana had breast cancer and picking up on it early saved her life.
So glad to hear your nana picked it up early! Definitely an essential for you Jess – as I’m sure you know, family history increases the risk! xM
I am the worst person when it comes to routine. 🙁 I am starting to try get in a routine because I now realise how important it is for my body.
No better time to start than the present, right babe? xx
Great idea, I’m in!
