I’ve been fat all my life. Seriously, my baby pictures are ridiculous with my huge chubby cheeks and folds in my elbows and knees. Super cute.
I also hit my current height of 5 feet 9 inches when I was 15 years old, so have always had to deal with being tall and wide. I was teased relentlessly at school, particularly when I became the only girl at intermediate with boobs.
I ended up as an adult utterly ashamed of my body. I was suspicious of anyone who seemed to be attracted to me, unable to understand how this was even possible. I was what you’d call a Nevernude, and I adopted a blankclothes uniform of clothing I thought I could be less visible in.
Refereeing roller derby gave me a self-made persona. Now I get to be Mental Annie. Mental Annie does not have any f*cks to give about how anyone thinks she looks. Her attitude has seeped into my real life feelings about my body, and now I still wear mostly black, but I also wear a lot of stripes and closer-fitting clothes. I have a lot less f*cks to give about what people think about me than I used to and that’s awesome.
I wanted to be involved in Fat Girls Shouldn’t Wear Stripes because I’ve always believed that people can wear whatever they like, anytime, anyplace and it’s no one’s business to say otherwise. Also, as a derby referee I’m specifically required to wear stripes, so I thought it would be pretty great to be a part of it.

She is gorgeous!
Wow
God damn, this girl got swag.
I remember the first time I watched roller derby at TSB and you came out in a corset and lace dress with heels (you were judging that night) and I thought “Shit, that’s the confidence I want to have and how I want to look!”
You are an inspiring woman!
She is super cool!
