Drink more water (so you don’t feel like a lizard)

Tips to drink more water and stay hydrated: Get a cool drinking vessel like this Pusheen cup

I like to think I’m doing a good job of staying hydrated, but the truth is I probably don’t drink as much water as I should. While I know I should be drinking a minimum of two litres a day, the reality is that some days I get to 9pm and I’m wondering why I feel absolutely parched – it’s because I’ve only had one glass of water the whole day. Time to give myself a very stern talking to. THIS IS WHY YOUR SKIN FEELS LIKE A LIZARD! DRINK UP, GIRL!

Drinking water is important for so many reasons. It helps to regulate our body temperature, helps our brains and bodies function, and it definitely helps to make sure our skin is hydrated! We all know the reasons why we should drink more water, but sometimes it’s not that easy, right? Here are a few things that I have found make it easier for me – let me know yours!

FIVE THINGS THAT CAN HELP YOU DRINK MORE WATER

1. Get a cool drinking vessel

I’ve recently broken a couple of my favourite drinking glasses so I’m currently on the look out for some nice replacements for those. I’m thinking maybe these Monstera leaf ones or maybe something like this Harry Potter glass that changes with the temperature? I find that when I like whatever I’m drinking out of, I’m likely to drink out of it more often. My boyfriend bought me this cool Pusheen cup and it really makes me smile whenever I drink out of it so naturally it’s my first pick but I definitely prefer glass.

2. Make drinking easy

Your chosen drinking vessel has to be easy to use. If you’re driving or at the gym or juggling small kids, you don’t want to fuck around with caps and screw off lids. I used to have a bite style drink bottle that was super easy to drink out of – I didn’t have to undo anything or tip it up, just bite the mouthpiece and suck up the water. Easy as, so I drank loads of water. Unfortunately that’s broken too, so I’m also on the hunt for a new drink bottle.

Tips to drink more water and stay hydrated: Make your water more interesting and try different drinks like WaiLife Alkaline Water

3. Make your water more interesting

Add some mint or strawberries or a bit of cucumber for a different taste. Use a Sodastream to add some bubbles (cold bubbly water is delicious!). Try different kinds of water. There used to be a specialty water store near my house, and tasting a few different kinds of water made me realise how different water from difference sources could taste! WaiLife has alkaline water and they also do some infused ones like rose and saffron. They sent me some to try recently, and the pure natural water is really nice and refreshing.

4. Use a straw

I don’t know why, but there’s a big novelty about drinking through a straw for me. I like metal straws because they get cold when you drink cold water through them, and they feel nice in my mouth than reusable hard plastic or silicone straws. They ones I have are similar to these, but I’d definitely recommend getting ones the appropriate length for your drinking glasses as too long or too short can be a pain.

5. Check the temperature

I love a really cold glass of water. In fact, I’m more likely to drink that than I am a room temperature one. We always keep water chilling in our fridge so it’s easy to pour and go. In winter when I’m feeling cold, I have a lot of herbal teas – I try to stick to ones with no caffeine as much as possible, my two favourites are Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint, both by Harney & Sons.

Other than that, set regular timers throughout the day to remind you to drink up. And maybe slather on some moisturiser to help hydrate your skin from the outside!

I’ve been struggling to drink my normal amount of water (4 – 6 litres per day) since I left my old job. Not being in a formal office and working set hours means I’m not in the routine I’m used to. I’ve been down to less than 2l per day and I know I need a lot more than that. It being winter doesn’t help either, I don’t feel hot to remind me to drink. Thanks for the reminder to be conscious about it.

A change in routine can make a big difference! I think I used to drink a lot more water when I worked from an office than I do now that I work from home, maybe because I saw other people having a drink and that was a reminder for me? Struggling to build my own routine again, but I’ll get there!
