Every family has their own traditions and ways of celebrating the holidays, and since Christmas is getting very close I thought I’d share a few of mine.
Light It Up
Every year we head out to check out the Christmas lights together at some point during the week before Christmas. My favourites are the full on lights shows put on to music by some people – so impressive and always very magical! Where is the best place to look at lights? Let me know where we should go in the comments below!
The Night Before Christmas
There is way too much “staring at a screen” time that happens every day (my whole job involves staring at a computer for hours on end), so I really prefer to have quality time with people that doesn’t involve them staring at their phone. Having already been out and discovered the best Christmas lights earlier in the week, Christmas Eve is a great time to stay in and avoid the last minute Christmas rush. I’m planning a fun family night in this year with board games, new pyjamas, snacky platter food (let’s be honest, Christmas Day seems to be so food centric that the last thing I feel like doing is cooking on Christmas Eve as well) and snuggles on the couch with a Christmas movie. Please let me know your favourite family Christmas movie, I’m not sure what we should watch this year.
Refreshments For Santa
When I was a kid, the snacks left out for Santa included beer or a glass of milk (usually beer though, our parents convinced us that’s what he preferred) and mince tarts or homemade biscuits (preferably shortbread). Times have changed and due to strict drink driving laws and food allergies, Santa is now getting Little Island chocolate coconut milk and a gluten free fruit mince bite. Yum.
Those are three of our pre-Christmas traditions, does your family have any?
Let me know about them in the comments below!
Our Christmas tradition is to put the tree up on Christmas eve. It stems back to when my grandfather would take my dad and his siblings out on Christmas eve and steal tree from the next door neighbour (the guy didn’t actually mind) and then decorate it.
Hahaha I love it! That totally sounds like something my dad would do (and probably has done!)
The only “actual” tradition I follow is making Fruit cakes. Those babies have been basted in brandy every week or so and smell amazing!! I cut 1 into halves or quarters for my friends. The other I take tp my Mum’s on Xmas day.We share it-sooo yum with a coffee. The other tradition is that we make something different to eat each year.I am making Lamb tagine and Jewish chopped liver pate(as a nod to my Jewish side) my teen is either making Tiramisu or Cheesecake,my nephew is still undecided as is Mum-being a Gemini she can’t make up her mind!! The 4 of us will be together whatever and that is our tradition..
Oh man, fruit cake! My grandma makes fruit cakes every year but I’ve never tried. Maybe I should give it a go next year…
