Aussie Curves: Bodycon

AUSSIE CURVES header

When I started my Fat Girls Shouldn’t Wear Stripes project, bodycon was very high on the list of what fat girls supposedly should not wear. I know, even as I post this, that there will be more than one ignorant twit out there thinking (or saying) something along the lines of “oh hell no, fat girls should not be wearing form fitting clothing”. Well guess what? When I get up in the morning, I don’t dress for you. I dress for myself, in clothes that make me feel great!

Oh my gosh, it’s a fat girl wearing a bodycon dress without shapewear. We’re all going to die…

Now, this is the first bodycon dress I’ve worn in a long time. I could have worn it with shapewear, to suck in my podgy tummy, hide my cellulite and hug my curves, but I didn’t because I have never found shapewear that I enjoyed wearing and I believe that clothing should be a pleasurable experience. Besides, I don’t need something constricting to suck me in and smooth me out – if I don’t care about my belly rolls, neither should anyone else.

If you’re not a regular on this blog, and you’ve found this post because someone has shared it with you, you’ve googled foxy fat babes in bodycon or have somehow stumbled across my blog while searching the internet for pictures of cats, you might be surprised to know that I believe that people (including me) should be able to wear what they want without fear of judgement. Oh sure, I know people still judge me – I’m subjected to it every time some small-minded bigot feels the need to make a disparaging comment about me on one of the many pictures of me on the internet. And trust me, there are a lot of small-minded people out there…

My point is (and the whole point of the Fat Girls Shouldn’t Wear Stripes project) is that what you wear is no one else’s damn business. So long as you feel fabulous (and aren’t in danger of being arrested for indecent exposure – that’ll just ruin your party, trust me), I say wear what you like. If someone doesn’t like it, they can feel free not to look!

I also love that Skorch Magazine was inspired by a comment from my lovely friend Natalie (check out her tumblr for body positive awesomeness) to kick off a hashtag #imfatimgoodwiththat for this weekend. In response to a comment on facebook that called for the word fat to be eliminated from our vocabularies because of the negativity associated with it, Natalie said, “fat is a physical descriptor. it’s not a bad word. fat is no worse than being called thin or blonde or tall or anything else. staying away from the word and treating it like an expletive and an insult only perpetuates body shame. i’m fat. and it’s okay to call me that.”

I couldn’t agree with you more Natalie! I’ll be posting one of the pictures from this set to my instagram page and tagging #imfatimgoodwiththat and I hope you’ll join me. I have a lot more to say on the subject of the words we use to describe our bodies, but I’ll save that for another day. It’s Easter, and I want to go spend time with the people I love.

I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, whatever you’re up to. Make sure you reserve sometime for loving your body and yourself!

Found this page through googling various things as I have a bodycon dress that I’m incredibly nervous to wear…well, not anymore! It’s inspiring to see someone with so much confidence not caring what others think πŸ™‚ I’m gonna wear my dress with pride…because why not?! πŸ˜€ You look fantastic!

I was nervous as hell the first time I wore a bodycon dress in public, but once I took some time to think about how the dress made me feel (sexy as hell!) I realised that no one else’s opinion matters but my own! Rock that dress, Megan! xo

I LOVE this! You look fabulous, and it feels wonderful to see a body that looks like my own. I have no intention of forcing myself into Spanx so that I fit someone else’s standard of beauty. You look wonderful. <3

Thanks Joan! I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one! xM

“When I get up in the morning, I don’t dress for you. I dress for myself, in clothes that make me feel great” BOOM! So much win! I agree 100% with everything, but that sentence really resonates with me! I think you look amazing, I love your figure, I wish I had such hourglass curves instead of being a rectangle.

Thanks Natalie! I spent a long time dressing for others, and when I realised that the only person I needed to please was myself I was so much happier!

Babe, you seem to be always wearing the wrong size bra! Ps: do you try to show off your pierced nips?

    • April 21, 2014 / 7:12 pm

I know, since I had a fitting done recently I’ve been on a never ending mission to find a bra that fits me properly and doesn’t cost the earth. Unfortunately I haven’t found one I like enough to fork out half my weekly income for! So for now, I’m wearing what I have. Re: piercings, not particularly, but kind of impossible to hide them when it’s cold πŸ˜‰

Stunning! Love that dress, especially the colour on you! (Off to buy it too now) πŸ™‚

    • April 20, 2014 / 1:29 pm

Thanks Mel! Sadly, I don’t think it’s available any more – I got it on sale and couldn’t find it on the 17 Sundays website or on The Iconic πŸ™

      • April 21, 2014 / 7:15 pm

Hey Mel, you might be able to get it from Zebrano (in black or stripes), they will soon be stocking 17 Sundays Basic in NZ. Not sure if that’s widely known yet, so consider this your sneaky heads up πŸ˜‰
