And just like that, lazy summer days have gone and autumn is upon us in all it’s cold, windy, rainy glory. The key to surviving the cooler months is making sure that you’re toasty warm, and unless you’re able to stay in bed wrapped in blankets like a burrito, your best bet is to grab a warm coat and layer up – so here are a few of my favourite plus size coats for autumn.
Cropped jackets are the perfect go to on autumn days when there is a chill in the air but we’re not quite at “freezing your butt off” level. If you’ve seen my first look post about the latest 17 Sundays collection, the inclusion of this sequined jacket in this post was pretty inevitable. Be prepared to see it a lot over the next wee while, because you can be sure that it’s going to be part of my wardrobe post haste.
SHOP IT: 17 Sundays Rewired Denim Jacket, AUD $159.95 from The Iconic | Sara Moto Leather Jacket, $199.99 from EziBuy | MYNT 1792 Wren Moto Jacket, AUD $220.00 AUD $110.00 from The Iconic
Regardless of the season, a trenchcoat is an essential item in every wardrobe. If you go for a neutral shade, then this classic piece will see you through years to come. I’m on the hunt for a new one myself, the problem is – which one to choose?
SHOP IT: So Chic Black Trench, $199.99 from City Chic | Classic Trench Coat, AUD $59.95 from Crossroads | Caramel Kisses Trench, $199.99 from City Chic
Parkas or anoraks are perfect for everything from walking the dog to standing on the sidelines cheering at your kid’s football game. They keep you nice and warm on chilly days and are the ideal casual style jacket. Make sure you get one with either a belted or drawstring waist so that you can adjust it to fit your body shape (bonus points if you get one with a hood).
SHOP IT: Rib Trim Utility Jacket, $169.99 from City Chic | Twill Parka, AUD $99.99 from Autograph | Sara The Fur Hood Anorak, $139.99 from EziBuy
When things get really cold (like the cold snap that hit yesterday, holy moly), that’s when you need to break out the proper coats. You know, the ones that people in places with snow and really low temperatures wear (only ever seen on television while I grew up in the “winterless North”). Our climate has changed so much that what used to be a mild Auckland winter I am now finding myself seriously layering up. Brr!
SHOP IT: MYNT 1792 Edinburgh Coat, AUD $260.00 AUD $130.00 from The Iconic | Soft Faux Fur Collar Coat, $199.99 from City Chic | ASOS Curve 60’s Military Coat, $155.35 from ASOS
Statement coats. They might be a classic cut but in more of a bold colour than the neutrals that we favour (because they go with everything). If you’re usually a neutral wearing person (I see you there, in your black on black on black!), then a statement coat could be just what you need to breathe life into your wardrobe. I’m really in love with this woollen cape, and hope that ASOS brings it out in different colours – I’d love one in black, one in a deep oxblood red and one in navy. Oh dear…
SHOP IT: Sara The Coat, $169.99 $129.99 from EziBuy | Virtu Mayfair Duffe Coat, AUD $199.95 from TS14+ | ASOS Curve Exclusive Brushed Wool Cape, $144.99 from ASOS
Okay, so now I’ve got you thinking about coats, what style is your jam? I’d love to know what styles are most popular with my readers – let me know below!
I recently treated myself to the fur collar coat from City Chic, it’s so lovely in real life!! It’s got a very vintage feel with the swing skirt and soft fur collar..
Love your blog, and your style Meagan!
Ooh exciting, good on you Mel! I really want to go in and try it on but I’m scared I’ll never want to take it off
my coat is a black duffel style one from ezibuy that I love, but I wouldn’t mind finding a jacket for that in between cardigan and coat type weather. Thanks for this round up.
Hi Megan
I am much bigger than the plus size models featured and was wondering are there any tricks or tips, besides trying on clothes at the actual store, on how you ladies are able to tell if a particular item of clothing will suit your body shape but also you? especially since alot of these stores do not have physical stores in my area so not able to try on pieces that interest me.
How can you tell Megan?
I guess having a good eye for such things will help but this ability I lack.
cheers
Hi Gene, I would recommend searching for reviews or posts where other people are wearing the garments, that might give you a good idea. Other things I take into account is the cut of the fabric, the type of fabric used and the shape of the model it’s shown on. And if it’s not a good fit, I make the most of the returns service!
