12 plus size sweaters to keep you warm this winter

When I got up this morning, it was 1ºC. That’s not really a temperature that I operate well at (who does, really?), and it made me acutely aware that I don’t own any sweaters. After my closet sale and donating a whole lot of clothes, shoes and beauty products to women who needed them more than I do … I’m going to have to do a bit of shopping to find something warm and snuggly.

Sara Heart Print Sweater and Yours Hot Pink Ruched V-Neck Jumper

Sara Heart Print Sweater, $69 from EziBuy | Hot Pink Ruched V-Neck Jumper, USD$26 from Yours Clothing

What I really need is a nice warm jumper that I can layer up with a couple of long sleeved tops, but unfortunately plus size sweaters seem to be few and far between – cardigans are en vogue and everywhere. So I’ve hunted high and low, separating the good, the bad and the ugly and I’ve found a few sweatshirts that fit the bill.

Autograph Animal Print Knit Jumper and City Chic Shoulder Detail Jumper

Animal Print Knit Jumper, $22.49 from Autograph | Shoulder Detail Jumper, $89.99 from City Chic

I’m quite partial to a knit jumper, preferably something that is a thinner knit so that I can layer it without looking super bulky. For example, today I had four layers on (it was only 6ºC when we left the house, so I had to layer up in order to stay warm), and it was still cold.

Yours Teal Knitted Long Sleeved Jumper and Autograph Rib Front Tunic Jumper

Teal Knitted Long Sleeved Jumper, USD$19 from Yours Clothing | Rib Front Tunic Jumper, $78.75 from Autograph

The other bonus of a thinner knit is it’s versatility. You’re not limited in the way you wear it – while you can go for a traditional jeans and a sweatshirt or trousers and a cosy jumper, when you wear a knit sweater you can wear it tucked in to a skirt in the manner of a top.

Merino knits are a great idea because they’re thin but extra warm, and they will keep you warm even if you get wet (pretty much a necessity considering how often it rains in New Zealand in winter). It also wicks away moisture, so merino knits are great for if you’re active (running, skiing, hiking … whatever is your jam!).

Simply Be Tape Yarn Jumper and Simply Be Soft Boucle Fluffy Jumper

Khaki Tape Yarn Jumper, £22 from Simply Be | Soft Boucle Fluffy Jumper, £30 from Simply Be

If you’re after something cosy to snuggle in to (and even perhaps wear over your thinner knits on an especially cold day) then go for something textured. While big chunky knits aren’t always the most appropriate for layering, they are great for a casual look and are easily paired with jeans and boots.

Now that I’ve found all these great plus size sweaters, my only problem is choosing which one (or maybe two) to get! So I need your help – let me know which one you like best in the comments below!

Love the white city chic one with the gold shoulders!

Isn’t it cool? I love the shoulder detailing. I have a cardigan from a few years ago that’s similar and I love it!

These are all super cute and well priced. I just went to Kathmandu and picked up a couple polypropylene tops for biking, and they are ridiculously sized (the biggest size barely fits me) and not at all stylish. So I may need a second shopping trip to even out the style factor. 😉

You know, that’s what’s really missing from the NZ market – plus size outdoor wear. I would love some poly-prop tops, but they seem to be scarcer than activewear! Stylish shopping trip definitely required to even things out 😉

I love the one with the hearts on it!

Isn’t it cute?! The neckline doesn’t suit me (#bustygirlproblems) so I need someone else to rock it so I can live vicariously!

Oh I love the merino cowl neck from Farmers and the ASOS striped jumper (love horizontal stripes!). I think I need to go shopping too!

Farmers has a big red dot sale on at the moment, make sure you get in quick! xo

I’m wearing sweaters instead of tops every day at the moment! This weather made me realise I don’t really have long sleeve tops. So sweaters it is.

I have a lot of long sleeved tops but they’re all from about 5 years ago so don’t fit quite how I want them to. Might be time for some more of those as well
